Atlas Van Lines in the USA is to return to hydroplane racing with the legendary Blue Blaster. The hydroplane has been reported as reaching speeds of up to 180mph when racing in the 1970s and 70s. Driven by Bill Muncey, it won the 1981Thunder at Evansville and, according to Atlas, defined an era of hydroplane racing.
The restored boat will be driven by NASCAR champion and long time Blue Blaster fan Jimmie Johnson at the Seafair Weekend Festival in Seattle. Jimmie’s coach will be Chip Hanauer, who took over from Muncey as the driver and went onto win the Unlimited National and World Championship.
“There is so much nostalgia surrounding hydroplane racing and its ties to Atlas Van Lines and our agent network,” said Jack Griffin, Chairman and CEO of Atlas World Group. “For that reason, reigniting this partnership makes sense, and we are honoured to have a legendary champion such as Jimmie Johnson at the helm to drive the restored boat that hasn’t seen the water in over 40 years.”
