Worldwide ERC has reacted positively to passage of the Moving Americans Privacy Protection Act (S. 758) by Senators Steve Daines (R-MT), Gary Peters (D-MI) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI). This bipartisan bill would help protect the sensitive personal data of transferees and military personnel shipping their household goods to the United States, a reform long advocated by Worldwide ERC.
“Worldwide ERC greatly appreciates the leadership of Senators Daines, Peters and Stabenow to protect the sensitive personal data of employees and our service members being relocated to the United States or returning home from abroad,” said Worldwide ERC President and CEO Lynn Shotwell. “Our members are the workforce mobility professionals who help these individuals relocate, and protecting their privacy during moves has been a long-time priority for Worldwide ERC.”
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is required to sell the manifest data on vessel shipments into the United States to data brokerage firms that post the information online to paid subscribers. Making public the personally identifiable information of the transferee, including military personnel, exposes them to identity theft, fraud and unwanted solicitations. By directing CBP to remove sensitive information before making the manifests open to the public, this bill will help secure the personally identifiable information of military personnel and transferees shipping their household goods to the United States.
Worldwide ERC acknowledged the leadership of its coalition partners – the American Trucking Association’s Moving and Storage Conference and the International Association of Movers, as well as the support of the National Association of Realtors and the Senior Executives Association.
